This spring, Lakefield LLP Associate Danielle Webster and four law students from the University of Saskatchewan College of Law partnered with Westmount Community School to run a weekly program for a Grade 6/7 class.
Students explored topics like Access to Justice, Systemic Racism, Empathy and the Law, Restorative Justice, and Indigenous Justice. Then they moved into Criminal Law and how it intersects with these issues.
The program ended with a Mock Trial at the Court of King’s Bench, where students acted as lawyers, witnesses, and jury members. They prepared questions, reviewed evidence, and presented their case, leading to a guilty verdict.

A judge from the Court of King’s Bench joined the session, answering questions and sharing insight into the justice system.
This hands-on program shows how learning about law and justice can spark curiosity, build understanding, and give students a real sense of how the system works.
